PPSSPP is a free, open-source emulator for the PlayStation Portable (PSP). It runs PSP game files on Windows, Android, iOS, macOS, and Linux — often at higher resolutions and frame rates than the original hardware.

PPSSPP does not include any commercial games. You provide your own legally obtained ISO, CSO, or PBP files, or play free homebrew titles.

No. PPSSPP ships without any commercial games. You provide your own legally obtained game files or play free homebrew titles distributed by their authors. The emulator is a player, not a game store.

PPSSPP is highly optimized, but requirements differ by platform and the games you play. Demanding titles like God of War: Chains of Olympus need more power than lighter 2D games.

• Windows: Windows 7 SP1+ (64-bit recommended), 2 GB RAM (4 GB+ ideal), GPU with DirectX 11, OpenGL 3.3+, or Vulkan.
• Android: Android 5.0+ (Android 10+ recommended), ARMv7 or ARM64. Mid-range phones from ~2018 onward typically run most games at full speed.
• iOS / iPadOS: iOS 12+, iPhone 6s or newer. Recent iPhones and iPads handle HD rendering comfortably.
• macOS: macOS 10.13+, Intel or Apple Silicon. Metal renderer recommended on modern Macs.
• Linux: x86_64 or ARM64, OpenGL 3.3+ or Vulkan, SDL2. Flatpak and AppImage builds simplify installation.

Vulkan is generally faster and more efficient on modern Android and Windows devices with supported GPU drivers. It reduces CPU overhead and often delivers smoother frame pacing.

OpenGL (or OpenGL ES on mobile) is the safer fallback on older hardware or when a game has rendering glitches with Vulkan. Some titles work better on one backend than the other.

Metal is the recommended backend on macOS and iOS. Switch backends under Settings → Graphics → Backend and restart if prompted.

Start with these recommendations, then adjust per game using per-game settings (right-click or long-press → Game Settings):

• Rendering resolution: 2× PSP (960×544) or 3× for crisp HD on powerful devices. Lower to 1× if frames drop.
• Texture scaling: xBRZ or Hybrid at 2×–3× sharpens blurry textures. Higher levels cost more GPU time.
• Anisotropic filtering: Enable at 4× or 8× for cleaner angled surfaces with minimal overhead.
• Frame skipping: Leave off for best experience; enable only as a last resort on very weak devices.

Black screen on launch: Often caused by a corrupt ISO, wrong render backend, or missing video files. Try switching Vulkan ↔ OpenGL, disabling "Lazy texture caching" and "Hardware transform" in game settings, or re-dumping the game. Some titles need "Skip buffer effects" enabled.

Audio crackling or stuttering: Usually a performance issue. Lower rendering resolution, disable texture scaling, or switch audio backend (WASAPI on Windows, OpenSL on Android). Set audio latency to Balanced; Very Low latency can crackle on slower devices.

Update to the latest build from ppsspp.org. Many game-specific fixes ship in each release.

Yes. PPSSPP is an emulator — it runs software you provide. It does not include any commercial PSP games. To stay within the law in most countries, you should only play games you have legally obtained.

Common legal paths include dumping your own UMD discs or digital purchases from a PSP you own, using homebrew titles distributed freely by their authors, or playing demos officially released by publishers.

Downloading ROMs or ISOs of games you do not own is generally considered copyright infringement in most jurisdictions, regardless of whether you also own a physical copy. Laws vary by country, and this is not legal advice — consult local regulations if unsure.

PPSSPP does not distribute or endorse piracy. The safest approach is to dump media you personally own using appropriate hardware and software tools.

There is no functional difference. PPSSPP Gold is the same emulator with the same features, performance, and updates. Gold is sold on Google Play as a way to financially support the lead developer, Henrik Rydgård.

PPSSPP supports Xbox, PlayStation, Nintendo, and generic Bluetooth/USB gamepads on all platforms.

Desktop: Connect via USB or Bluetooth. Open Settings → Controls → Control Mapping, select a PSP button, then press the corresponding controller button. PPSSPP auto-detects most popular pads.

Android: Pair your controller in system Bluetooth settings first. Map buttons under Settings → Controls. On-screen touch controls hide when a physical controller is connected.

iOS: MFi-certified controllers and many Bluetooth pads work out of the box. Map buttons under Settings → Controls if defaults are incorrect.

Yes. On mobile, tap the screen icon during gameplay or go to Settings → Controls → Control layout. You can resize, reposition, and change opacity of every virtual button. Save per-game layouts for different genres — RPGs may need a different setup than action games.

Enable "Combo keys" to map complex inputs like L+R shoulder buttons to a single touch zone.

PPSSPP is not always available on the App Store in every region. Common installation methods include:

• Official builds: Download from ppsspp.org when an iOS package is offered.
• AltStore / sideloading: Install via AltStore or similar tools using an Apple ID. Apps may need re-signing every 7 days (free account) or 365 days (paid developer account).

After installation, import ISO/CSO files via the Files app, iCloud, or USB. iOS sandboxing means you must import games into PPSSPP's accessible directories.

Yes. PPSSPP emulates the PSP's ad-hoc (local wireless) multiplayer for supported games. Multiple devices on the same Wi-Fi network can connect as if they were nearby PSPs.

To set up: on each device, go to Settings → Networking, enable networking, and ensure all devices share the same network mode. One device hosts; others join through the game's multiplayer menu.

Not every game supports ad-hoc, and some titles have partial compatibility. Online infrastructure multiplayer (old official servers) is generally unavailable unless a fan server exists.

Cross-platform ad-hoc is possible in some configurations — for example, an Android phone and a Windows PC on the same network running the same PPSSPP version. Success depends on the game, network setup, and firewall rules.

Ensure all devices run a recent PPSSPP build, have networking enabled with matching settings, and are not blocked by router AP isolation. Mixed platform sessions work best with games known to have robust ad-hoc support, such as Monster Hunter titles.

Common causes include: AP isolation enabled on the router (blocks device-to-device traffic), mismatched PPSSPP versions, firewall blocking UDP ports, or one device using a VPN. Disable AP isolation, allow PPSSPP through the firewall, and confirm both players use the same networking mode in Settings.

Some games require the host to create the multiplayer room in-game before others can join. Check the game's specific multiplayer instructions.

In-game saves use the game's built-in save system. These saves are stored as standard files inside PPSSPP's virtual PSP memory stick and behave exactly like saves on a real PSP. They are portable and safe for long-term progress.

Save states capture the emulator's entire state at an exact moment — including mid-battle or mid-animation. Press F2 (desktop) or use the on-screen save icon (mobile) for quick slots. Save states are faster but are not guaranteed to work across different PPSSPP versions.

Best practice: use in-game saves for main progress, and save states for tough sections or experimentation.

Yes. PPSSPP supports replacing in-game textures with higher-resolution custom packs — a popular way to modernize classic titles visually.

Enable Settings → Tools → Developer tools → Replace textures. Place texture pack files in the correct folder structure under PPSSPP's texture directory, typically mirroring the game's internal texture hash paths.

Community packs exist for games like Persona 3 Portable and Kingdom Hearts: Birth by Sleep. Only download packs from trusted community sources. Texture packs can significantly increase VRAM usage.

PPSSPP supports cheat codes similar to Action Replay and other PSP cheat devices. Enable cheats under Settings → System → Enable cheats, then import or create cheat files (typically .ini format) in the game's cheat folder.

Right-click or long-press a game → Cheats to toggle individual codes. Community cheat databases exist for many popular titles. Using cheats may cause instability or break in-game saves in some games.

Yes. Copy your PSP's SAVEDATA folder from the memory stick to PPSSPP's equivalent directory (found under Settings → System → Savedata folder). Saves are generally compatible, though some games with anti-tamper measures may reject transferred data.

You can also move saves between PPSSPP on different platforms by copying the same folder structure.

The widescreen hack stretches or adjusts the viewport so games designed for the PSP's 16:9 screen fill modern ultrawide or 16:9 displays more naturally. Enable it per game under Game Settings → Graphics → Widescreen hack.

Not all games handle it correctly — some UI elements may appear off-screen or stretched. Test per title and disable if visual glitches appear. 2D games and visual novels often benefit most.
